OpenAI is preparing to launch new products that strategically move away from ChatGPT as its core product.
The chatbot will be further developed into a super-app that combines coding tools and AI agents. With just a smart chatbot, OpenAI is not going to win the proverbial war, because Claude, Gemini and also Grok already offer more than just that.
The Financial Times, citing sources close to the company, reported that the innovations could already be launched sometime in the coming weeks.
Codex, the product for software developers, will gain more prominence in the new constellation. The aim is to prise engineers away from Claude Code. That is currently the crowd favourite, after Anthropic devoted a great deal of attention to it right from the start. OpenAI focused more on the consumer product ChatGPT.
In its new form, the chat app will also draw more attention to the existence of integrations with third parties.
The ambition to develop a super-app is vast, but unproven in the West. When taking over Twitter, Elon Musk said he wanted to expand the messaging service into a super-app, but we are now four years on. X Pay, for example, still has yet to be rolled out internationally. In Asia, by contrast, super-apps are common in the form of WeChat, Alipay, Grab, Gojek, LINE and Paytm.
For OpenAI, the strategic shake-up of the portfolio comes across as defensive and at a precarious moment. The company is preparing a stock market flotation and, with the redefinition of ChatGPT, is signalling to investors that it is not necessarily still the market leader.
Last weekend, the lead designer of OpenAI’s own AI chips announced that he is moving to Anthropic.
