Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI has filed a lawsuit against a former engineer, Xuechen Li, for allegedly stealing confidential trade secrets related to its Grok chatbot to bring to his new role at OpenAI. According to a report from Reuters, the complaint was filed in a California federal court on Thursday and claims Li took information on “cutting-edge AI technologies with features superior to those offered by ChatGPT.”
The lawsuit states that Li began working as an engineer at xAI last year, contributing to the training and development of Grok. The company alleges that in July, shortly after accepting a position at OpenAI and selling $7 million in xAI stock, Li stole proprietary information. During a meeting on August 14, Li reportedly admitted to taking company files and “covering his tracks.” A subsequent investigation allegedly uncovered additional stolen material on his devices that he had not disclosed.
The legal action highlights the intense competition for AI talent among technology firms and the ongoing rivalry between Musk’s ventures and OpenAI. Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, has previously sued the company and its CEO, Sam Altman, alleging a departure from its original mission. OpenAI countersued Musk for harassment in April. This new case follows another lawsuit filed by xAI against OpenAI and Apple in Texas on Monday, accusing them of monopolizing the market for AI chatbots on Apple devices.
This dispute coincides with a period of rapid growth in the AI sector. Data from the IndexBox platform shows that the global AI market is projected to continue its significant expansion, with companies aggressively investing in proprietary technology and talent acquisition to secure a competitive advantage. xAI is seeking an unspecified amount in monetary damages and a restraining order to prevent Li from working at OpenAI.
