Meta has introduced Incognito Chat, a new privacy-focused feature for conversations with its Meta AI chatbot on WhatsApp. Designed for users discussing sensitive personal, financial, or health-related topics, the feature uses Meta’s Private Processing technology to keep chats inaccessible to others, including Meta itself. Once enabled, conversations become temporary, with prompts and AI responses disappearing by default and not being stored.

The Incognito Chat feature will begin rolling out on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app over the next few months. The privacy-focused feature is designed to let users have temporary and confidential conversations with Meta AI, especially when discussing sensitive topics such as personal, financial, or health-related matters.

The rollout comes as AI-powered chatbots become increasingly embedded in everyday messaging platforms. At the same time, Meta has faced scrutiny after quietly removing the end-to-end encryption option for Instagram direct messages, allowing the platform to access the contents of DMs, including media and voice notes. Concerns around AI safety have also intensified following reports of harmful chatbot interactions, including a lawsuit against OpenAI over allegations that ChatGPT assisted in planning a school shooting in Florida.
Meta said its Incognito Chat relies on a system called Private Processing, which creates a secure cloud environment where AI requests can be analysed without exposing user conversations to Meta or external parties. The technology is based on Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), which are intended to provide privacy protections similar to end-to-end encryption when on-device AI processing is not possible.
According to Meta, the company has been working on ways to offer AI features on WhatsApp while maintaining privacy at scale. Unlike incognito-style modes offered by some rival AI platforms, Meta claims its system prevents even the company itself from reading user conversations. Meta also revealed plans for a new feature called Side Chat, which will provide AI assistance inside ongoing chats without disrupting the main conversation, while still being protected through Private Processing.
