“Hey Chatbot, Who Should I Vote For?”
A New York Times report reveals how political candidates are actively working to influence the answers to queries like these, as voters increasingly turn to AI technologies for information on who to support.
Dwight Lloyd, a Democratic primary candidate for the Missouri state legislature featured in the article, noted that he is “constantly working on it every day.” To shape the answers produced by AI chatbots, Lloyd routinely updates his campaign website alongside his biographical entries on Wikipedia and Ballotpedia. He relies on optimization recommendations generated by CampSight, a tool recently launched by the progressive group Run For Something Action Fund.
According to the Times, the strategy yielded an “instant impact”: following his adjustments, chatbots began recommending Lloyd rather than his opponent.
Industry experts interviewed by the Times emphasized that much of how AI technology operates—and precisely what inputs it responds to—remains poorly understood. Nonetheless, significant resources are being directed toward capitalizing on these systems. This push has spurred a new industry known as Answer Engine Optimization (AEO).
Candidates like Lloyd leverage AEO tools such as CampSight to safeguard their political prospects, counteract online misinformation, and ensure their core message reaches voters. However, less scrupulous actors are adopting similar tactics for commercial gain, backed by an emerging class of marketing services.
A report by 404 Media highlighted how vendors selling peptides and hormonal supplements—ranging from legitimate businesses to grey-market operators—spammed Reddit’s “biohacking” communities to boost product visibility. Because AI agents cite user-generated content from platforms like Reddit, Wikipedia, and Quora in roughly half of their responses—with nearly a quarter of all citations originating directly from these sources—the biohacking subreddit ultimately instituted a total ban on mentions of peptides and hormone supplements to curb AEO manipulation.
This shift in how AI scrapers consume web content has given rise to firms like RedRover, which markets itself as deploying “an army of agents publishing blog content & reddit posts that solves both SEO & AEO at scale.” The accounts managed by RedRover and similar entities are carefully “warmed up,” maintaining realistic posting histories to avoid detection while shaping platform discourse.
Despite the apparent sophistication of these operations, researchers at Cornell University discovered that simple, 13-word comments on crowd-sourced sites can successfully manipulate chatbot outputs, particularly when the text mirrors the phrasing of the user’s prompt. “It really is just that simple,” one Cornell researcher told 404 Media. “The way that you can attack these systems is usually so much dumber than you think it is, or than you think it needs to be.”
