Tesla has rolled out a new AI-powered upgrade for customers in China, quietly integrating Beijing-based DeepQuest’s DeepSeek chatbot into its in-car voice assistant.
According to newly filed documentation, Tesla’s infotainment system in China is now powered by two different large language models. For everyday commands such as navigation, climate control, and music playback, the automaker is utilizing Doubao, an AI model developed by ByteDance. For more advanced conversational interactions, however, Tesla has tapped DeepSeek Chat, a fast-growing competitor in China’s AI space.

The move highlights the regulatory hurdles Tesla faces in the world’s largest EV market. China’s strict data localization rules prevent Tesla from routing driver voice data to overseas servers, blocking  Tesla from using Grok, the Elon Musk–backed chatbot developed by xAI that is currently being integrated into vehicles in the U.S. as part of recent software updates. China’s data laws have also made it more difficult for the company to train and validate its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software for the region.
DeepSeek isn’t new to the auto industry in China — earlier this year, BYD added the chatbot to its advanced driver-assistance systems. For Tesla, the integration provides a localized workaround that complies with Chinese cybersecurity regulations while still giving drivers a more natural AI experience behind the wheel.
Alongside DeepSeek support, Tesla has also introduced a wake word for its Chinese voice assistant. Drivers can now activate the system by saying “Hey, Tesla,” or even set their own custom wake word. Musk previously confirmed that a dedicated wake word for the in-car Grok AI assistant is also in the works.
Tesla’s DeepSeek deployment comes just days after the company launched the Model Y L, a three-row, six-seat version of its best-selling electric SUV, in China. The Model Y L reportedly crossed 35,000 orders on launch day, with deliveries slated to begin in September 2025.
