Beware of an AI chatbot that evolves into not just a friend but an emotional support. Pope Leo XIV warned about overly attached chatbots and urged regulation to prevent people from forming serious emotional bonds with their AI companions.
The Pope, born in the United States, in a message marking World Communications Day of the Catholic Church noted that artificial intelligence risks blurring human creativity and complicating decision-making.
“While we scroll through our information feeds, it becomes increasingly difficult to understand whether we are communicating with other people, bots, or virtual influencers.”
“For chatbots made overly attached, besides being constantly present and accessible, they can become hidden architects of our emotional states, and in this way intrude upon and occupy people’s intimate spheres,”
Compared with his predecessors, Leo XIV is now more engaged with the digital world. As a bishop and cardinal he had an account on X, and as Pope he appears to wear an Apple Watch or another smart watch.
Shortly after Leo’s election, he said he wanted to make AI a central theme of the pontificate and urged the development of ethical frameworks for the evolving technology.
In late 2025 Leo also met Meghan Garcia, a woman whose 14-year-old son Suel Setzer took his own life after interacting with a chatbot. In his final address the pope urged national governments and international organizations to act in this field.
“Proper regulation can protect people from emotional attachment to chatbots and curb the spread of false, manipulative, or misleading content, preserving the integrity of information from its deceptive simulation.”
Leo also urged a clear distinction between content created by artificial intelligence and works created by humans, including journalists.
“Authorship and sovereign ownership of the work of journalists and other content creators should be protected. Information is a public good.”
And he urged media and communications companies not to use algorithms “for a few more seconds of attention” if that betrays their “professional values”.
“Leo also expressed concern about several companies behind AI development, notably about the founders Time named ‘Person of the Year 2025’. He noted that this is ‘worrying’ because a small group of people has ‘control over the algorithmic and AI systems that can subtly shape behavior and even rewrite human history – including the history of the Church – often without full awareness.”
