Artificial intelligence continues to make its way into classrooms, and some educators say its potential as an educational tool outweighs its risks. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has introduced ‘Chats for Students in India’, a new initiative showcasing how college students across the country are using the chatbot to study, learn new skills, and navigate college life.
A new webpage highlights over 50 real-world use cases from students at top universities, including IIT Madras, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), and Delhi Technical Campus, among others.
Prompts include ‘prepare for an exam’, ‘create a study schedule’, ‘pre-grade your assignment’, ‘break down complex sentences’, ‘use role-play to prepare’, and ‘define proof of concept’.
“Education has become the number one use case for ChatGPT in India, driven entirely by students from the ground up. Students are using AI as an intellectual sparring partner to develop real-world skills like problem-solving, analytical reasoning, and creative exploration,” said OpenAI in a statement.
“ChatGPT is now one of the most widely used learning tools in the world. Nowhere is this more true than in India, which is home to the largest student population on ChatGPT globally, with millions turning to it for homework help, exam prep, and to explore new ideas,” the company said in August.
“The popularity of ChatGPT in learning also presents new challenges: how to ensure AI deepens rather than shortcuts learning, and how to help students build critical thinking skills when answers are instantly available. OpenAI Learning Accelerator is designed to address these challenges and empower educators and learners—to ensure AI strengthens learning, supports teachers, and meets the unique needs of India’s education system.”
More teachers around the world are recognising the power of ChatGPT, as creating outlines is one way it can be used in class. It could also write personalised lesson plans for each student.
