OpenAI is merging the Chat and Work tabs in the ChatGPT desktop app, according to an email sent to users on 2 November. The change was first reported by TechCrunch.
The desktop app currently has separate ChatGPT and Codex sections, with ChatGPT further split into Chat and Work tabs. After the merge, users will be able to take an idea from early exploration to finished work “all in one place”. They can bring in files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation or complete tasks on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work.
Codex, OpenAI’s coding tool, will remain a separate experience within the desktop app. However, ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same allowance pool. OpenAI said the change won’t affect most users, but some may find they need to wait for usage resets more often, depending on how much they use the tools and which models they choose.
The merged experience will first be available to select users for feedback before a wider rollout. OpenAI hasn’t given a date.
The move follows a similar one by rival Anthropic, which merged Claude’s chat and Cowork functions into a single interface in September.
