New Delhi, Aug 22 (KNN) OpenAI, the company behind the AI chatbot ChatGPT, is planning to open a corporate office in New Delhi in the coming months, marking its formal entry into India, one of the world’s fastest-growing technology markets, according to Bloomberg.
The company has started hiring to expand its local team. Currently, OpenAI has only one employee in India, Pragya Misra, who leads public policy and partnerships.
The new office aims to strengthen OpenAI’s presence in India, tapping into the country’s large pool of tech talent and its strategic role in global AI policy and innovation.
India, with a population of 1.4 billion, has emerged as a key market for technology firms, offering opportunities as well as challenges due to regulatory changes and local market dynamics.
OpenAI plans to build closer partnerships with the Indian government, businesses, and developer communities. The company has committed support to the federal government’s USD 1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission, an initiative focused on developing large and small language models tailored to regional needs.
This move reflects OpenAI’s goal to ensure AI technologies are adapted to diverse cultural, linguistic, and policy contexts.
India is already OpenAI’s second-largest market for ChatGPT users, highlighting strong demand. To expand access, the company recently launched an affordable monthly plan priced below USD 5, in addition to its existing free and premium subscriptions.
Later this year, OpenAI will host its first developer day in India, aiming to nurture local innovation and strengthen the developer ecosystem around its tools.
By establishing a local office and growing its team, OpenAI seeks not only to leverage India’s technology talent but also to participate in shaping AI regulations in one of the most strategically important markets for the future of artificial intelligence.
