OpenAI has been working on its own web browser to challenge the might of Google’s Chrome, and it could launch within weeks. The browser will include its own chatbot, likely built around one of ChatGPT’s more affordable models, and is said to offer new ways to interact with the web by leveraging AI. The real end goal, though, may be for OpenAI to use data on how its new users interact with the web to further augment its services.
The explosive growth of the artificial intelligence industry has lead to many of the world’s top tech firms vying for dominance, and Google and OpenAI are right on the threshold. They both offer competing AI models in Gemini and ChatGPT, respectively, but this war isn’t only on a single front. OpenAI is now opening up a new one by throwing its weight into the browser space, potentially cutting off a portion of Google’s most important data harvesting services.
Google, and in turn its parent company, Alphabet, derive the majority of their revenue from advertising and Chrome provides a fantastic resource for it to help target its adverts through collecting masses of user data on how they use the internet. OpenAI may be looking to get a piece of that pie whilst also poaching directly from Google’s resource pile.

It’ll actually have to attract users for that, though, even if it does have a well of 500 million active ChatGPT users to draw from, as per Reuters. To that end, OpenAI is reportedly building its browser around chatbot interactions. It will encourage users to ask questions of the chatbot, rather than necessarily clicking through to websites. By answering the kinds of questions that people would normally Google, the ChatGPT browser has the potential to be a serious competitor for Google’s core business.
An argument could be made that if Google is going to turn itself into a chatbot with AI summaries, OpenAI’s offering might be quite competitive.
But even with the potential for new ways of web interaction, OpenAI will have to go a long way to replace people’s established browser habits. Chrome is the default web browser on Android, the most used operating system in the world. It’s also the most popular web browser on Windows machines, too. Not to mention other alternative browsers OpenAI will have to go up against, like Mozilla’s Firefox and the Brave browser.
OpenAI has also expressed an interest in buying Chrome if Google was ever forced to sell as part of ongoing anti-trust investigations.
