New Delhi: OpenAI has announced that it will begin testing advertisements inside ChatGPT in the United States in the coming weeks, marking a notable shift in the company’s approach to monetising its AI chatbot. Ads are set to appear for logged-in adult users of the free version and the new low-cost ChatGPT Go subscription, while higher-tier plans to remain ad-free. 
Under the planned rollout, ads will be clearly labelled and displayed separately from ChatGPT’s responses, typically appearing at the bottom of a conversation when relevant to the user’s query. OpenAI has emphasised that advertisements will not influence the AI’s answers, and that user data and conversations will not be shared with advertisers.
Ads will also be restricted from appearing near sensitive topics such as health, mental health or politics, and will not be shown to users under 18. 
Below are a few “ads principles” shared by Open AI on their official blog post:
Mission alignment: Our mission is to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity; our pursuit of advertising is always in support of that mission and making AI more accessible.
Answer independence: Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you. Answers are optimized based on what’s most helpful to you. Ads are always separate and clearly labeled.
Conversation privacy: We keep your conversations with ChatGPT private from advertisers, and we never sell your data to advertisers.
Choice and control: You control how your data is used. You can turn off personalization, and you can clear the data used for ads at any time. We’ll always offer a way to not see ads in ChatGPT, including a paid tier that’s ad-free.
Long-term value: We do not optimize for time spent in ChatGPT. We prioritize user trust and user experience over revenue.
The introduction of ads follows the global rollout of ChatGPT Go, an $8-per-month subscription tier offering expanded features, and reflects efforts to develop new revenue streams beyond subscription fees amid continued infrastructure and development costs. 
This marks one of the first major tests of advertising within a widely used AI chatbot and signals OpenAI’s move toward diversified monetisation, even as competitors like Google’s Gemini currently do not seem to plan similar ad integrations.
