OpenAI has announced plans to ease restrictions on its ChatGPT chatbot, including allowing erotic content for verified adult users. The new policy is based on the principle of “treating adults like adults.”
CEO Sam Altman said that the stricter safety measures introduced over mental health concerns had made the chatbot “less useful and less enjoyable” for many users who do not have such issues.
The restrictions were introduced after a California teenager, Adam Raine, died by suicide earlier this year, with his parents filing a lawsuit claiming that ChatGPT had provided him with specific instructions on how to end his life. The case also prompted an investigation by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) into the potential negative effects of chatbots on children and teenagers.
“Given the seriousness of the issue, we wanted to get this right,” Altman said, arguing that new safety tools now allow OpenAI to ease restrictions without neglecting mental health risks.
The plan also includes launching an updated version of ChatGPT that will allow users to customize their AI assistant’s personality — for example, offering more human-like responses, frequent use of emojis, or a friendly communication style.
The most significant change will come in December, when OpenAI plans to introduce stricter age verification, giving access to erotic content only to confirmed adult users.
The company has not yet provided details about the age verification process or any additional safety mechanisms.
In September, OpenAI launched a special version of ChatGPT for users under 18, which automatically redirects them to age-appropriate content and blocks harmful and sexual material.
