OpenAI may be preparing to rethink its subscription model for ChatGPT, with senior leadership indicating that the current era of flat-rate, unlimited usage plans could soon give way to a more usage-based approach as artificial intelligence systems grow more resource-intensive.
According to remarks made on the BG2 Podcast, Nick Turley, Vice President of Product and Head of ChatGPT, stated that rising demand for more powerful AI capabilities is likely to reshape pricing structures. He said that power users are increasingly consuming more intelligence and suggested that unlimited subscription models may no longer be viable, comparing them to the concept of unlimited electricity usage, as stated during the interaction.
Turley further indicated that given the scale of recent technical and product breakthroughs, a shift in pricing models would not be surprising, signalling a potential departure from the current flat-fee structure.
His comments align with earlier observations by Sam Altman, who has described AI as a utility that could eventually be metered. Altman stated that the long-term vision is to treat intelligence similarly to services such as electricity or water, where users pay based on consumption, while also highlighting ambitions to make AI widely accessible.
The potential shift comes as OpenAI seeks to maintain its leadership in the AI chatbot market amid intensifying competition from rivals such as Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude, both of which are seen as offering comparable or, in some cases, more advanced capabilities. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the company has internally viewed Anthropic’s growing traction as a wake-up call, prompting renewed focus on developers and enterprise users.
OpenAI currently operates a three-tier subscription model for ChatGPT. The entry-level ChatGPT Go plan, priced at ₹399 per month, offers extended usage but includes advertisements and fewer advanced features, and is presently available free in India as part of a market expansion strategy. The mid-tier ChatGPT Plus plan is priced at ₹1,999 per month, while the top-tier Premium Pro plan costs ₹19,900 per month and provides extensive capabilities, including unlimited GPT-5.4 file uploads, unrestricted image generation and maximum access to advanced features such as deep research and agent mode.
Despite these offerings, Turley’s remarks suggest that the concept of unlimited usage, particularly at higher tiers, may not be sustainable in the long term as computational demands and infrastructure costs continue to rise.
