OpenAI said it is removing limits on text-based chats for all ChatGPT users as the service has passed 1 billion weekly users.
The company said the change will be powered by a new GPT-5.6 Luna model, which will become the default for Free and Go users, replacing GPT-5.5.
Free and Go users will also receive a new “Think” button for complex questions. OpenAI said separate limits will remain in place for files, images, voice and image generation.

Plus and Pro users will get access to an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model. OpenAI said the model is intended for quick tasks including questions, web research, advice, planning, writing and decision-making.
The company said the updated GPT-5.6 Sol will provide more compact and robust answers. OpenAI said the GPT-5.6 Sol model used for Codex and Work is unchanged.
Plus and Pro users will also get a thinking slider that lets them adjust how much thought the model puts into an answer. OpenAI said users can tune the slider based on the complexity of a query and the steps needed to solve it.
OpenAI said an internal evaluation found factual errors were 62% less common in GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% less common in GPT-5.6 Sol than in GPT-5.5-Instant.
The updated GPT-5.6 Sol is available to Plus and Pro users today. OpenAI said other changes for Free and Go users will begin arriving this week, and all users will gain access next week to unlimited text chats and the new Think button for harder questions.
