OpenAI has introduced OpenAI Presence, a new enterprise product designed to help large organizations deploy AI agents for customer support, sales, and internal operations across voice and chat channels. Announced on July 22, 2026, Presence marks a shift in OpenAI’s enterprise strategy from offering raw model access toward providing a fully managed system for building, governing, and continuously improving production-grade AI agents.
Presence combines model reasoning with company-defined policies, guardrails, and escalation rules meant to keep an agent’s behavior accurate and predictable even as products, policies, and customer behavior shift over time. OpenAI says that Presence is well tested, having been refined over several years of enterprise deployments before its public unveiling.
Each Presence deployment is built around a specific task, such as resolving billing disputes, processing insurance claims, or handling internal IT service requests. Once live, real production sessions and escalations continually surface gaps in the agent’s performance. Presence uses OpenAI’s Codex coding assistant to analyze these signals and propose updates, which human teams can test and approve before rolling them into production. OpenAI positions this as a continuous improvement loop that lets an agent adapt over time without requiring engineers to manually retrain or rebuild it from scratch.
OpenAI said it works directly alongside each customer to identify high-value workflows, connect the necessary internal systems, set permissions and policies, test the agent thoroughly, and support it after launch, with select systems integrators able to assist as deployments scale.
OpenAI has been using Presence internally to power its own English-language phone support line. According to the company, the system met or exceeded the quality benchmarks used to grade human support staff within just a few weeks of launch, and now resolves roughly 75% of inbound customer issues without needing a human agent to step in.
Spanish banking group BBVA is exploring AI-powered voice support for everyday banking needs in Mexico, with Daniel Ordaz, the company’s head of AI transformation in Mexico, saying the partnership with OpenAI is aimed at delivering faster and more personalized customer service.
Japanese telecommunications giant SoftBank is testing natural Japanese-language conversations on Presence, with company executives reporting that frontline teams rated the agent’s dialogue highly for its natural and accurate quality.
Australian insurer IAG is examining how Presence could support customers during high-demand events such as severe weather, with CEO of Retail Insurance Julie Batch noting the goal is to keep support available when customers need it most, particularly during claims processes tied to natural disasters.
Organizations can run Presence through simulations that generate common requests, edge cases, and higher-risk scenarios to check whether the agent reaches the correct outcome, follows company policy, uses the right tools, and escalates appropriately. Guardrails are designed to intervene automatically if an interaction moves outside approved boundaries, such as a retailer restricting which product databases an agent can draw from when answering sales questions.
For situations that fall outside what the product currently supports, OpenAI said its Forward Deployed Engineers and partner network can work directly with customers to bring more complex use cases into production. Presence’s Codex-driven components run on GPT-5.6, the model family OpenAI released last month, whose most advanced variant reportedly set a record on the OSWorld benchmark, which tests multistep computer-use tasks similar to the workflows Presence is designed to automate.
Presence is not yet available as a self-serve product. OpenAI is rolling it out to a limited number of eligible enterprise customers through what it calls a limited general availability program, with deployments led by its Forward Deployed Engineers and select global systems integrators. Companies interested in adopting the platform are being directed to contact their OpenAI account team rather than sign up online. OpenAI said it will continue to support voice-focused customers who prefer direct access to its frontier models through the standard OpenAI API.
