OpenAI has recently been reported to be working on its search browser to take on Chrome. Now, a latest leak has revealed the name of the under-development artificial intelligence (AI) web browser, which might be called Aura internally. A user has spotted the name “Aura” within ChatGPT’s code. Though the AI firm has yet to announce plans to develop an AI-native web browser officially, reports hint at an imminent launch.
Notably, the browser is said to be built using Chromium, the same open-source platform that powers Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
Here’s what we know about OpenAI’s browser launch timeline, expected features and all other details.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), a user, Tibor Blaho, lead engineer at AIPRM, has claimed that Aura could be the internal codename of the OpenAI web browser. Additionally, he also highlighted that some user strings mentioned “is Aura,” which indicates whether a user is on an Android device, an iOS device, or using a desktop app.
Another string mentioned “is Aura sidebar,” which suggests that OpenAI’s AI-powered web browser could feature a sidebar that allows users to access a chatbot acting as central intelligence for the app. There has also been the mention of “in Aura,” which hints that the AI browser could have a special layout that opens within the ChatGPT web interface. However, none of these details are officially confirmed.
Aura is expected to be built on Chromium to ensure compatibility across multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, and mobile devices. The browser is said to combine AI features with traditional browsing tools. It is expected to provide a conversational AI interface, allowing users to interact with the web more intuitively. It could help with tasks like summarising content, filling out forms, and even booking appointments, thanks to embedded AI agents. These features will make the browsing experience more efficient and personalised.

The browser is expected to launch in the coming weeks. If it manages to attract ChatGPT’s 500 million weekly users, OpenAI could gain significant ground in a space long dominated by Google Chrome. The latter currently controls over 65 per cent of the browser market.
