OpenAI has launched pilot testing of group chat within ChatGPT in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and New Zealand.
Like in messaging apps, you can create conversations with friends or family – but in this case, ChatGPT is part of the conversation.
The chatbot can offer you ideas: for example, helping with planning vacations, renovation projects, or choosing a restaurant for dinner.
The feature can also be used for collaborations with colleagues: ChatGPT can prepare reports based on notes that you and the coordinators share.
To start a group chat, click the people icon in the top right corner of an existing chat. You can then invite up to 20 people, who must create a profile with a name, username, and photo.
In conversations where someone is under 18, the chatbot automatically restricts sensitive content.
Answers in group chats are generated by the GPT‑5.1 Auto model, which chooses which model to use based on the question.
OpenAI says it has “taught” the chatbot to understand when to be silent or when to respond, but users can summon ChatGPT by mentioning its name in the conversation.
The company plans to improve the feature based on user feedback before making it widely available. /Telegraph/
