OpenAI is introducing Google Cloud Infrastructure to operate its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot “Chat GPT.” Attention is focusing on the appearance of joining hands with competitor Google to break away from the infrastructure strategy that had been dependent on Microsoft (MS).
According to CNBC and other foreign media on the 16th (local time), OpenAI recently added Google as a new cloud supplier. Following the existing MS Azure, CoreWeave, and Oracle, Google Cloud Platform will also be used to operate ChatGPT and API (Application Programming Interface) services.
OpenAI expanded Microsoft’s Azure AI platform to Oracle cloud infrastructure in cooperation with Oracle last year, and in March this year, it signed a five-year contract worth about $12 billion with Coreweave.
Google infrastructure to be used by OpenAI will be operated in the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom.
This decision by OpenAI is interpreted as a cross-section of the conflict relationship between OpenAI and MS. Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI and has integrated the OpenAI model into its product line. However, the two companies have recently formed a direct competitive structure in major businesses such as AI tool sales for developers and subscription services for companies, and open AI is trying to break away from dependence on MS.
OpenAI’s explosive computing demand is also one of the reasons behind the decision to introduce Google Cloud. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman made headlines by posting on social media X in April, saying, “We are having difficulty securing a graphics processing unit (GPU),” adding, “Anyone who can supply 100,000 GPUs right now should contact us.”
Meanwhile, OpenAI is also in full swing competition with Google. In December last year, it launched its own search engine, challenging Google, which occupies 90% of the global search market, and recently, it is known that it is also developing a web browser similar to Google Chrome. In such a fierce competitive relationship, attention is being paid to how the relationship between the two companies, which goes hand in hand with some kind of cooperation, will expand in the future.
