The settings are located in the “Personalization” menu and can be adjusted to “more” or “less,” with the default set to “standard.”
The new options allow users to tailor the tone of ChatGPT in addition to the feature added in November that lets users choose a basic style. This has been a recurring issue in 2025. In April, OpenAI retracted an update due to the chatbot’s “excessive flattery.” Subsequently, they adjusted GPT-5 to make the model “warmer and friendlier.”
Some experts argue that the tendency of neural networks to praise users and confirm their beliefs is a “dark pattern” that can be addictive and may negatively impact mental health.
OpenAI has updated its models’ interaction guidelines with teenagers to mitigate potential mental health risks.
The decision comes amid growing criticism from politicians, educators, and human rights advocates. Public attention to the issue has intensified following several tragic cases of suicide among teenagers who had prolonged interactions with chatbots.
In December, 42 state attorneys general called on tech giants to enhance neural network safety to protect children and vulnerable groups.
Meanwhile, Senator Josh Hawley introduced a bill proposing a complete ban on minors accessing AI chats.
The updated OpenAI model specifications are based on existing versions that prohibit generating sexual content or encouraging self-harm.
The rules will work in conjunction with the upcoming age prediction system, which will automatically implement restrictions for minors.
OpenAI is negotiating to raise up to $100 billion, valuing the company at $830 billion. According to The Wall Street Journal, the ChatGPT developer aims to close the deal by the first quarter of 2026, partly through sovereign fund investments.
The startup has committed to spending over $1.4 trillion on AI infrastructure, although it may remain unprofitable.
Successfully closing the round will significantly bolster the startup’s financial position. According to PitchBook, OpenAI’s current reserves are estimated at $64 billion.
OpenAI is preparing for an IPO valued at $1 trillion. The campaign could become one of the largest in history.
