OpenAI has finally done what users were asking for. They are now set to merge the Chat with Work tabs on ChatGPT, something that rival Anthropic had done with Claude’s chat and Cowork functions a couple of months ago.
Users had been reporting that the ChatGPT desktop app became confusing as there was the chatbot section and the Codex section with the ChatGPT part also containing Chat and Work tabs. There were so many options that sometimes users said they felt overwhelmed and found it tough to figure what exactly they were working on and where.
In an email to users, OpenAI has said that initially the new experience would be available to select users and based on the feedback they receive, changes would be made and rolled out on a wider fashion.

“This will enable you to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place. You can bring in your files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do things for you on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work. Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app,” the email said.
What this means is that the Chat and Work under ChatGPT, sitting alongside Codex on the macOS and Windows does three tasks, namely the Chat function asks questions and has conversations, the Work does research, analyses information, creates documents, spreadsheets and presentations etc. while Codex develops software with local files and data.
The company also said that with the transition, both ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same allowance pool, a change that is unlikely to impact most users. However, based on usage and models, some users may need to wait for resets more frequently.
The mail also clarifies that “Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.” Even in the help page, OpenAI states that it will remain a separate view, its workflows  unchanged, and its history separate from ChatGPT history. Codex is also not selectable on web or mobile, though supported desktop Codex chats can be reached from the Remote tab in the ChatGPT mobile app.
From December onwards, Plus, Pro, and Business plans will have a shared usage allowance across ChatGPT and Codex, says the support page. Also, as discussed earlier, the usage will be measured in tokens, the units of information AI models process and generate. More demanding tasks and advanced models will generally consume more of that allowance.
