USA TODAY Sports used Microsoft Copilot AI to predict every single game for Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season. The results, as expected, were a mixed bag.
The AI chatbot posted a record of 8-8 across the NFL’s 16 Week 1 matchups. It’s two notable upset picks – the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks – both failed to deliver wins while several other squads came up short in their efforts to prove Copilot right.
Will the AI chatbot improve its results in Week 2? USA TODAY Sports decided to see, while also keeping an eye on whether the chatbot had any overreactions to Week 1.
The process of collecting the picks was simple. The AI chatbot was prompted to pick a result for each of the 16 Week 2 matchups. The basic form of the query used to generate the results was as follows:
The appropriate matchups were swapped into the prompt as it was repeated to generate the AI chatbot’s picks for each of the 16 games.
Copilot was generally successful in interpreting the prompt. However, it occasionally produced outdated information. That wasn’t overly surprising, as some Large Language Models (LLMs) struggle to keep up with the latest sports news and updates. When that happened, Copilot was prompted to fix the errors and reassess the prompt.
Below is a summation of Copilot’s picks for Week 2, along with a brief, human-crafted analysis of each of the chatbot’s answers.
AI’s take: Copilot pointed to Green Bay’s “strong home-field advantage” at Lambeau Field as a reason to back the Packers. The chatbot added the Commanders haven’t beaten the Packers at Lambeau Field since 1988 and that Green Bay’s “balanced offense” should test Washington’s defense.
Our take: It’s worth noting Washington has only played at Lambeau Field six times since 1988, but Copilot is right about the Packers having an advantage. Home teams went 13-5 in games played on Thursday during the 2024 NFL season, including the NFL opener and Thanksgiving games.
AI’s take: Copilot complimented Trevor Lawrence for “looking sharp” in Week 1 but noted it expects a big game from Joe Burrow after the quarterback’s “modest” outing against the Browns. It predicted Jacksonville’s defense may struggle to contain Cincinnati’s passing offense in what could be a shootout.
Our take: The Bengals have tended to get off to a slow offensive start under Zac Taylor, and it remains to be seen whether they will buck that trend in Week 2. Still, given Cincinnati’s shaky defensive footing, it’s fair for the chatbot to pinpoint this as a potential high-scoring matchup.
AI’s take: Copilot isn’t a fan of the Giants’ “offensive inefficiencies” and pointed out Russell Wilson‘s 45.9% completion rate as a red flag from New York’s Week 1 loss. It is also worried about left tackle Andrew Thomas’ injury and liked the “resilience and offensive balance” Dallas showed in its Week 1 loss to the Eagles.
Our take: Brian Daboll announced Wilson as New York’s Week 2 starter, so it’s hard to argue against the Cowboys as the right pick here. Add in the extra rest Dallas is getting and the Cowboys should be favored to beat their divisional rival.
AI’s take: Copilot likes the Lions to “rebound strongly at home” and thinks Detroit’s defense can force Caleb Williams into mistakes. The chatbot noted the Bears showed “flashes of promise” in their loss to the Vikings but it trusted the Lions’ experienced offense to bounce back.
Our take: Jared Goff has posted a 3-17-1 record straight up in games where Sean McVay and Ben Johnson are not calling plays, so we’re a little less confident in Copilot that Detroit’s offense will perform better in Week 2. Still, it’s hard to be overly confident in the Bears after their “Monday Night Football” debacle, so the Lions could still win even if their offense doesn’t fully round into form.
AI’s take: Copilot was impressed by Matthew Stafford‘s Week 1 performance. It also praised the Rams defense for generating 18 pressure against C.J. Stroud and expressed concerns about Tennessee holding up against that unit given the squad’s “offensive line issues.”
Our take: Cam Ward was sacked a league-high six times in Week 1, so Copilot’s concerns about the Titans offense are warranted. The Rams should have the advantage in this one, though they could be in for another lower-scoring game.
AI’s take: Copilot is worried about the Patriots defense potentially being without Christian Gonzalez (hamstring) as well as the team’s poor history playing in Miami. It also noted concerns about Tua Tagovailoa‘s struggles in Week 1 but believes the Dolphins have more “offensive upside” in this matchup.
Our take: It’s hard to recommend backing the Dolphins after Daniel Jones just looked like a strong starting quarterback against them. At the same time, the Patriots haven’t won in Miami since 2019 and are just 2-10 at Hard Rock Stadium since 2013, so Copilot’s logic can be understood.
AI’s take: Copilot acknowledged Brock Purdy‘s potential absence impacts its projection for Sunday’s game, but it is still picking the 49ers to win because of San Francisco’s defense and Christian McCaffrey‘s versatility.
Our take: Mac Jones may not inspire a lot of confidence given his recent performance for the Patriots and Jaguars, but he may be a better fit in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Spencer Rattler also doesn’t figure to fare well against a strong 49ers defense, so San Francisco could still pull out the win.
AI’s take: Copilot is starting to believe Justin Fields, saying New York’s offense “looks revitalized” under the 26-year-old’s leadership. Still, it isn’t certain whether the Jets will be able to slow down Josh Allen after the Bills quarterback had a big game against the Ravens.
Our take: Allen had 424 yards of offense and four total touchdowns against the Ravens, so he figures to be a difficult matchup for a Jets defense that allowed 34 points to the Steelers. Still, Buffalo’s run defense struggled against Baltimore, so that could position the ground-dominant Jets to keep this closer than many anticipate.
AI’s take: Copilot liked that Aaron Rodgers “quickly built chemistry” with DK Metcalf in their first game together. It also opined Pittsburgh’s pass rush would challenge Seattle’s offensive line, which it believes could cause trouble for an offense that “lacked rhythm” in Week 1.
Our take: Rodgers certainly looked good and Seattle’s offensive line has long been a shaky unit. Don’t be surprised if Copilot gets this one right, even if the Seahawks’ No. 1-ranked pressure rate causes problems for the 41-year-old quarterback.
AI’s take: Copilot noted the Browns significantly outgained the Bengals in Week 1 (327-141) but couldn’t win because of “red zone inefficiency and turnovers.” The chatbot believes the Ravens are poised to take advantage of Joe Flacco‘s turnover issues while Baltimore’s offense “is firing on all cylinders.”
Our take: It’s hard to argue with Copilot’s logic, especially when adding that Browns kicker Andre Szmyt struggled in Week 1, missing an extra point and a potential game-winning field goal in a 17-16 loss.
AI’s take: Copilot credited Daniel Jones for his “breakout” Week 1 but believes Denver’s defense, which limited the Titans to 2.4 yards per play last week, will do a better job slowing him down. That said, the chatbot isn’t confident in Bo Nix, who it said “may not light it up,” so it expects this to be a close Broncos win.
Our take: Kudos to Copilot for not putting too much stock into Jones’ strong Week 1 showing. The Broncos defense is one of the league’s best stop units, so they should be able to carry Denver to victory even if Nix isn’t at his best.
AI’s take: Copilot is a big fan of Marvin Harrison Jr. and James Conner‘s matchups in this one. It believes the duo will help seal a Cardinals win while expecting Arizona’s defense to “pressure Bryce Young into mistakes.”
Our take: The Panthers struggled badly on offense in Week 1. The Cardinals weren’t as sharp as many had hoped against the Saints, but they should still have the edge in this contest.
AI’s take: Copilot has the Chiefs dropping to 0-2 to open the 2025 NFL season. Why? Because Kansas City is “still searching for rhythm on offense” and may be without its top two receivers, Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice, for this contest.
Our take: Perhaps Copilot is underappreciating the revenge-game angle for the Chiefs after their Super Bowl 59 defeat, but the Eagles defense should be better with Jalen Carter returning to action. This feels like a coin-flip game between two teams that didn’t look their best in Week 1.
AI’s take: Copilot is projecting a “fun, high-energy matchup” between second-year quarterbacks J.J. McCarthy and Michael Penix Jr. on “Sunday Night Football.” The chatbot is giving the edge to McCarthy and the Vikings after being encouraged by McCarthy’s fourth-quarter comeback and the presence of “matchup nightmare” Justin Jefferson.
Our take: If McCarthy and the Vikings can avoid starting slowly, they should be able to handle the Falcons. Still, Penix and Co. can’t be counted out, as the lefty looked good and made plays both through the air and on the ground against the Buccaneers in Week 1.
AI’s take: Copilot picked the Texans to win in Week 1 to no avail. The chatbot is sticking with Houston because it likes the team’s chances of pressuring Baker Mayfield with Tristan Wirfs out. It expects Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter to have strong games while the Texans offense should be under less pressure than they were against the Rams.
Our take: C.J. Stroud made plenty of nice throws despite being under relentless pressure against the Rams. Don’t be surprised if the Texans bounce back and earn a win in this intriguing “Monday Night Football” matchup.
AI’s take: Copilot is a fan of the Chargers’ top three receivers – Keenan Allen, Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston – but expects the Raiders to be “competitive” with Geno Smith at quarterback. Still, the chatbot thinks the Chargers defense is a “much tougher test” for the Raiders than the Patriots were, so it’s backing the visitors to close Week 1.
Our take: Justin Herbert looked great against the Chiefs, so he could repeat his success against the Raiders. The Chargers are also operated with a bit of extra rest after playing Friday, so they could be slightly fresher than the Raiders and Brock Bowers, who is dealing with a knee injury.
