Two top Netflix executives open up about the streaming giant’s latest changes. They will be embracing AI
Per Variety, Netflix chief product officer Eunice Kim and chief technology Elizabeth Stone recently discussed the nuances of the streaming platform’s latest overhaul, including the introduction of a new OpenAI-powered chatbot. The changes, which took place for the Netflix TV homepage on Wednesday, have been described by the streaming platform itself as “simpler, easier and more intuitive,” and were made in a bid to more prominently feature Netflix’s ever-expanding lineup of games and live events.
A controversial Judy Blume novel is getting adapted for the screen by Netflix.
“Our current TV experience was built for streaming shows and movies,” Kim explained. “This [homepage] is designed to give us a more flexible canvas now and in the future. Take live and games, for example, with on demand you can watch at your convenience. With a live event like the NFL on Christmas Day, you want to catch the action the moment that it happens, so we need to let you know when to tune in. And we are always adding new characters and challenges to our games, so we need better ways to feature these updates on the home page.”
Regarding the idea of Netflix embracing generative artificial intelligence with the introduction of a OpenAI-powered chatbot, Stone said, “We’re also exploring ways to bring Generative AI — which, unlike traditional AI, can create text, image and videos — to our members’ discovery experience… We want you to be able to discover shows and movies using natural conversational phrases, like, ‘I want something funny and upbeat,’ or ‘I want something scary, but not too scary…’ Believe it or not, that search phrase will actually yield results in the new experience we’ve started testing and that will be rolling out to more members this week.”
Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe has seemingly been hit by Prime Video’s latest round of censorship, sparking online concern and outrage.
Netflix itself broke down the changes to the homepage in a blog post published the same day the new look and features went into effect. In it, Netflix outlines the ways in which the more visible shortcuts allow for greater ease of access for users, while the changes to recommendations will reportedly make the homepage “more responsive to your mood and interests in the moment.” Netflix also noted that the change to the ways in which information for its offerings are displayed will allow users to “better focus on what makes each title relevant… With callounts like ‘Emmy Award Winner‘ or ‘#1 in TV Shows.'”
