Munger, Tolles & Olson Partner Jonathan Blavin will join the Media Law Resource Center and UC Berkeley Center for Law & Technology on May 14 at the 2026 Legal Frontiers in Digital Media Conference in San Francisco, California.
Jonathan will moderate a panel titled “Chatbots, Product Liability, and the First Amendment,” which will address recent lawsuits alleging that AI chatbot interactions have caused severe mental health issues, including self-harm among minors. Panelists will discuss whether AI outputs constitute “products” or “speech,” the appropriate legal standards for evaluating harm and whether AI-generated content is protected by the First Amendment. Jonathan will be joined by Professor Eugene Volokh, Senior Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution; Rebecca Ruiz, Senior Reporter at Mashable; Mackenzie D. Austin, Esq.; and Tori Noble, Staff Attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
This year’s conference will examine AI chatbot product liability and counseling, as well as child-safety regulations worldwide, including age-gating and social media restrictions. Attendees will also receive updates on the Supreme Court’s Cox v. Sony Music decision and intermediary liability matters in the EU.
