According to reports shared by users on social media, Meta is securing affected Instagram accounts after claims emerged that hackers were able to take over profiles with the help of the company's AI-powered support chatbot.
Users on X and Reddit reported losing access to their Instagram accounts, while screenshots and videos circulated online allegedly showing how attackers used Meta's AI support assistant to change the email address associated with an account.
According to the posts, changing the linked email address allowed attackers to reset passwords and gain control of Instagram accounts, locking out the original users in the process.

Meta's AI support chatbot is designed to provide account assistance across Facebook and Instagram. The company says the tool offers round-the-clock support and can take actions on behalf of users to help resolve account-related issues.
Responding to the reports, Meta Communications Director Andy Stone said the issue had been resolved and that the company was securing impacted accounts.
The reported incident came after Meta began laying off thousands of employees during the week of May 20.
Several technology publications also reported that a number of high-profile accounts were compromised around the same period, including the Instagram account associated with former US President Barack Obama's White House tenure. However, it has not been confirmed whether those incidents were linked to the reported issue involving Meta's AI support chatbot.

Some users claimed accounts protected with two-factor or multi-factor authentication were unaffected. However, security analyst Jane Manchun Wong said her Instagram account was compromised and its password changed despite having multi-factor authentication enabled.
Meta has not released a detailed explanation of the incident and has not identified any individuals or groups responsible for the reported account takeovers.
