According to a Reuters report, Meta Platforms will permit competing artificial intelligence services to operate on its WhatsApp messaging platform in Europe for a twelve-month period. This move follows pressure from European Union antitrust regulators, who had threatened to impose temporary measures after receiving complaints from competitors who were blocked from the service.
The European Commission, which oversees competition policy, had expressed concern about potential serious harm to rivals after Meta restricted their access to WhatsApp. The company had previously barred these external AI chatbots, allowing only its own AI assistant on the platform. In response to the regulatory process, Meta stated it will now support general-purpose AI chatbots using the WhatsApp Business API in Europe, believing this action eliminates the immediate need for regulatory intervention.
The Commission is now examining how these changes might affect both its review of potential interim measures and a wider antitrust investigation. Meta has indicated that allowing numerous chatbots onto its platforms creates operational strain and that alternative channels exist for AI providers. A similar situation unfolded in Italy, where Meta allowed rival chatbots onto WhatsApp following an order from the Italian antitrust authority, which continues its own investigation.
One complainant in both the EU and Italian cases criticized the new arrangement. Separately, Meta stated its policy adjustments will also apply in Brazil, following a recent court decision that reinstated an injunction from the country’s antitrust authority.
