Just once we thought that the days of annoying AI bots were a thing of the past. Meta unleashed 28 AI bots on its WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram platforms for over a year. The bots independently posted images and started chat conversations with real people. This resulted in increasingly complaints from users that they couldn’t block the bots. Meta claimed it was a bug.
According to Business Insider, Mark Zuckerberg is once again making use of AI bots. Internal documents from Alignerr, a company specializing in AI training, prove that Meta Platforms is currently working on new AI bots. The AI-powered chatbots are intended to independently address users on services such as Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram in the future. They will be able to initiate conversations on their own, for example, by pointing out films and making relevant recommendations.
Meta has confirmed to TechCrunch that it is currently follow-up messaging with AI bots, which only happens under certain conditions. The chatbot may only contact the user again if the user has previously initiated a conversation. Furthermore, the user must have asked the AI at least five questions within 14 days. Only then is further follow-up by the bot permitted.
Meta emphasizes that no repeated messages are sent. If the user does not respond to the first query, no further attempts are made. This policy is intended to ensure that AI communication is not intrusive. At the same time, the test shows that the bots are capable of remembering conversation content for a limited period of time. At least within this time frame, information from previous chats can be retrieved.
A Meta spokesperson explained that this feature is intended to help users discover more interesting topics and engage more deeply in conversations with AI. Those who stay on the platform longer also see more advertising, which of course strengthens the company’s business model.
However, whether Meta plans to monetize its AI chatbots remains open. The company declined to answer the question of whether sponsored content or paid responses will be part of its strategy. It is also unclear whether these types of chatbots will also be used in Meta’s virtual reality world, "Horizon Worlds", in the future.
