LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A group of Kentucky lawmakers met to take a look at the impact of artificial intelligence here in the Commonwealth.
The group began meeting at the end of the last session, with the focus of this most recent meeting being on the use of AI Chatbots in mental and behavioral health.
These chatbots are seen as a promising solution by some because they are affordable, easily accessible on smartphones, and can be offered in different languages.
Supporters argue these features make chatbots useful, especially in places where there aren’t enough mental health professionals.
Critics, however, say we need guardrails on the technology for data collection.
“AI is not a licensed professional and does not protect the public,” said Brenda Rosen from the National Association of Social Workers. “Unlike a licensed mental health professional, AI chatbots cannot recognize nonverbal cues, cannot escalate when a client is in crisis, and cannot be held accountable for harm. And yet, these tools are being promoted and used in mental health settings across the country.”
The meeting comes as a growing number of children are using chatbots every day to get personal advice and emotional support.
