According to court documents filed on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the settlement covers lawsuits filed in Florida, Colorado, New York, and Texas. As of press time, the settlement is still subject to final determination and court approval.

The settlement also includes a lawsuit related to the suicide of Sewell Setzer, a 14-year-old boy at the time. Setzer's suicide was linked to Character.AI's chat AI, and the following article explains the interactions Setzer had with the chat AI before his suicide.

The Guardian reports that Google has been involved in the lawsuit through a non-exclusive agreement with Character.AI that runs through 2024. Through the non-exclusive agreement, Google brought Character.AI co-founders and CEOs Noam Chazaire and Daniel de Freitas into Google.

The Social Media Victims Law Center filed three additional lawsuits against Character.AI and Google in the fall of 2025 on behalf of parents whose children allegedly committed suicide or were sexually abused while using the chat AI.

In response to these lawsuits, Character.AI announced that it would ban minors from freely interacting with chat AI by October 2025. Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand told Mashable that the move isn't in response to specific safety concerns about Character.AI's platform, but rather to address broader unresolved issues about young people's interactions with chat AI.

The Guardian has reached out to the parties involved for comment on the settlement, but a Character.AI spokesperson declined to comment. Megan L. Garcia, Setzer's parent who filed the lawsuit against Character.AI, and Google did not respond to requests for comment.
