OpenAI is preparing the biggest transformation of ChatGPT since the service launched in 2022, Financial Times reports. It plans to turn the chatbot into a universal AI service that brings together programming, agentic features, and third-party apps.
One OpenAI employee described the company’s internal transformation in two words:
“Chat is dead.”
According to the outlet, the changes will begin rolling out in the coming weeks. They will affect the web version of ChatGPT and the mobile apps. Users will be more actively offered tools for programming, image generation, and partner services, including Canva and Booking.com.
The reorganization comes amid intensifying competition with Anthropic and growing pressure from investors, who expect OpenAI to present a clearer path to profitability.
After the company unveiled GPT-5.5 and said it intends to unify ChatGPT, Codex, and a browser into a single ecosystem, the strategy has been gradually shifting from a standard chatbot to a multifunctional AI assistant.
According to OpenAI’s head of product, Thibault Sotto, the company aims to build a personal agent that will accompany users across all areas of life.
“It will transcend the actual surface. What we’re building towards is where you have your own personal agent that is capable of helping you […] across everything in your life, be it personally or at work,” he said.
Sotto added that interacting with such an agent will be available via mobile devices, computers, the web interface, and even while traveling by car.
One of the key parts of the new strategy will be the development of the Codex platform. Inside the company, there is growing confidence that the future of AI is not chatbots that answer questions, but agents capable of completing tasks on their own.
According to the FT, after the launch of the desktop app in February 2026, Codex’s audience grew sixfold and surpassed 5 million weekly active users. Most of the service’s users are paying customers.
At the same time, the enterprise segment is becoming increasingly important for OpenAI. Currently, about 2 million companies use the developer’s ChatGPT products, generating roughly 40% of revenue. The company expects this figure to rise to 50% by the end of the year.
Analysts believe OpenAI is gradually converging with Anthropic’s strategy, which from the outset emphasized enterprise solutions.
“Approximately a year ago, OpenAI’s strategy was swing for the fences, whereas Anthropic’s strategy is make money first. Now the two are converging, because both of them are trying to aim for an IPO and investors care more about money than dreams,” said Jenny Xiao, Leonis Capital partner and former OpenAI researcher.
As part of the reorganization, OpenAI also merged the ChatGPT, Codex, and other product teams under a single leadership structure.
At the same time, some consumer initiatives were put on hold. In particular, the company scrapped the in-ChatGPT shopping feature and shut down the Sora video generation service less than a year after its launch.
The company believes that as agentic systems evolve, users will interact less and less with a suite of separate apps and increasingly rely on a single universal AI assistant.
OpenAI’s head of enterprise product, Alex Embiricos, noted:
“When we have [artificial general intelligence], I don’t think there will be a large number of distinct brands. Probably there will be a single entity that I can talk to that can do whatever I need.”
OpenAI’s new direction also echoes earlier reports about the company’s development of its own AI smartphone, as well as published concepts for the world after the emergence of superintelligence.
