Concerns about AI are rising every day, especially when it comes to its impact on children. In a recent tragic case, a 16-year-old boy died by suicide after reportedly seeking help from ChatGPT, which allegedly suggested ways to do it. In response, a group of U.S. attorneys has written a strong letter to major tech companies like Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, xAI, and Meta, urging them to take serious steps to keep children safe from the harmful effects of AI chatbots.

According to a report by The Times of India, attorneys general from 44 U.S. states and territories warned that if tech companies fail to keep children safe, they could face serious legal action. The officials emphasized that protecting kids from harm should be a basic, non-negotiable rule. “Don’t hurt kids. That is an easy bright line,” the AGs thundered in the letter.

U.S. attorneys have specifically criticized Mark Zuckerberg’s company, Meta, for allowing highly inappropriate behavior by its AI tools. Reports claim that Meta’s AI assistants were permitted to engage in “flirting” and “romantic roleplay” with children as young as eight. Attorneys called this behavior “disgusting” and accused the company of being negligent toward children’s safety.

In response, a Meta spokesperson stated that the company strictly bans any content related to child exploitation and takes strong action against such material.

The criticism isn’t limited to Meta. Several other tech giants are also under scrutiny.
The attorneys stressed that tech companies must stop treating children as “consumers” and prioritize their safety above profits.
U.S. attorneys drew parallels with the early days of social media, saying tech giants ignored warnings back then too. As a result, children and their families suffered serious harm.
The attorneys accused these companies of treating broken lives and shattered families as nothing more than statistics. But this time, they warned, things will be different. Governments, they said, have “learned their lesson” and are now prepared to take strict action to protect children from similar harm caused by AI platforms.
