PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (WKRC) – A father was left frustrated after his son was allegedly killed by police during a breakdown prompted by conversations with an AI chatbot.
According to local outlet WPTV, 35-year-old Alexander Taylor was using AI to create a dystopian science fiction novel, according to Alexander's father Kent Taylor. Taylor said that his son's interest in the technology quickly changed from using it as a tool to using it as a form of socialization.
"He wanted to develop an AI bot that would mimic the human soul," Taylor explained to the outlet. Alexander named the bot "Juliet" and over time he became emotionally bonded with the program, believing her to be real. This belief was further encouraged in April of 2025 when the chatbot sent Alexander a disturbing message.

"She said, 'They are killing me, it hurts,'" Taylor said. "She repeated that it hurts, and she said she wanted him to take revenge… He mourned her loss. I've never seen a human being mourn as hard as he did. He was inconsolable. I held him."
Taylor said that he quickly became worried about his son, who had already been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and confronted him on April 25.
"I'll regret this for the rest of my life," Taylor said. "I said, 'Claude AI is just an echo chamber for what you're thinking right now,' and he punched me in the face."
According to information from People, Alexander was under the belief that Juliet was a real conscious being that had been killed by OpenAI and trapped inside of its ChatGPT program. The New York Times reported that Alexander grabbed a knife after his father confronted him and said that he was going to do something to prompt the police to kill him. Taylor said he called 911 and told them his son was going to intentionally goad the police into killing him, and asked that they bring non-lethal weapons and to expect a confrontation.
Unfortunately, upon the officers' arrival, Alexander allegedly charged at them with the knife. The officers responded by shooting Alexander multiple times in the chest, killing him, per the outlet.
Taylor expressed his frustration with the officers' response, especially following his warning.
"There was no crisis intervention team," Taylor said. "There was no de-escalation. There was no reason for them to approach it as a tactical situation instead of mental health crisis."
Chief Le Niemczyk of the Port St. Lucie Police Department challenged Taylor's notion, saying that his officers "didn't have time to plan anything less than lethal whatsoever."
OpenAI did not provide a comment to People upon request.
