AI chatbot ChatGPT has finally found a worthy competitor in Sora AI. The latest version of OpenAI’s text-to-video Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool, Sora, witnessed a download of over a million times in less than five days. With the achievement of this milestone, Sora AI dethroned ChatGPT as the world’s top AI tool. The app, which has bagged the top rank in the Apple App Store charts in the US, can instantly generate ten-second-long, realistic-looking videos with mere text prompts.
It took only five days for Sora AI to assert its dominance over ChatGPT and the figures announced by Bill Peebles are testament to that.
Serenading Sora’s success, the Sora AI head highlighted in an X (formerly Twitter) post how the app beat ChatGPT with faster one million downloads even after being exclusively available to people in North America.

The launch of the Sora app has led to a surplus of AI-generated videos on social media. The app’s easy-to-use interface has people generating all sorts of realistic-looking AI videos. Such is its popularity that some fans have gone to the extent of generating videos of deceased celebrities like Michael Jackson and Tupac Shakur.
However, things seemed to have gone out of hand with family members and friends of some public figures calling out people for generating AI videos of the deceased. For instance, calling the usage insensitive and invasive, Zelda Williams, the daughter of late actor Robin Williams, has asked people to stop sending her AI-generated videos of her father.
In another example of misuse of Sora AI, deepfake videos of characters from films, TV, and games have taken the internet by storm. As per CNBC, in a deepfake video of Sam Altman, the OpenAI boss is shown grilling Nintendo with several Pokémon characters saying, “I hope Nintendo doesn’t sue us.”
While Nintendo hasn’t taken any legal action, several companies have already initiated their legal battles with the Sora AI’s creators and rights holders of creative works.
Thus, Sora AI has indeed surpassed ChatGPT in the number of downloads. Yet, as the app’s way of handling copyright material and images of deceased celebrities has earned severe backlash despite its growth, it seems to be still developing more efficient ways to handle these problems.
