A new report reveals that OpenAI is planning a major redesign to ChatGPT that focuses on AI agents and coding, rather than its roots as a chatbot.
The Financial Times reports that OpenAI is planning to roll out this revamped ChatGPT “in the coming weeks” with two points of focus – AI agents, and coding tools.
The pivot comes as an OpenAI employee apparently said that “chat is dead,” referring to a belief within OpenAI that AI agents will be more valuable than the chatbot that most people know, and use ChatGPT for. Better competing with Anthropic is also reportedly a part of the push, with OpenAI’s Codex toolset being given “greater prominence and resources” as a part of the redesign.
The new “superapp,” as it’s being called, would unify Codex and AI agents, appearing first on the web and mobile apps.
This comes as OpenAI is reportedly working towards an IPO, as is Anthropic, with both companies shifting their focus towards AI tools that generate revenue. Chatbots, while widely used, are far harder to monetize as many users do not feel compelled to pay extra. OpenAI previously announced that ChatGPT would start showing ads earlier this year.
