But ChatGPT bore the brunt of the complaints, and it’s the fourth or fifth time in 2026 that OpenAI’s chatbot has landed on outage trackers in a big way. The trouble started Thursday morning, U.S. time, when users began seeing failed responses, stalled chats, and generic error messages instead of answers from ChatGPT. Newsweek reported that “by midmorning, the outage map reflected a national pattern of disruptions” across the United States, with ChatGPT accounting for roughly 80% of the problem reports it tracked. Khaleej Times, citing Downdetector data, gave a similar breakdown: 73% of user reports pointed to ChatGPT itself, while 15% named Codex, OpenAI’s coding tool, as the source of trouble.
Gulf News, which has covered OpenAI’s outages closely from the UAE, reported that the disruption hit “the web app, mobile application, and developer APIs” — meaning it wasn’t confined to one interface. Users trying to reach ChatGPT through the browser, the mobile app, or through their own software built on OpenAI’s API all ran into some version of the same failure. By early afternoon Pacific time, 9to5Google’s live coverage noted an update from OpenAI at 12:38 p.m. PT confirming that “all services are back to normal across ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok.”
One of the stranger features of this outage is how differently outlets reported the raw numbers, and that’s mostly a function of timing. Downdetector tallies reset and climb by the minute, so an outlet checking the tracker at 10:45 a.m. ET got a very different figure than one checking at 8:23 a.m. PT (11:23 a.m. ET). Softonic reported that Downdetector showed “more than 35,000 reports in the U.S. for ChatGPT, 1,400 for Claude, and 1,200 for Grok” at one snapshot, with a separate breakdown in India showing 2,800 ChatGPT reports.
Moneycontrol reported that user submissions “reached a volume above 30,000 within an hour,” while American Bazaar described reports that “skyrocketed past 30,000 within a single hour” according to its own read of Downdetector’s real-time telemetry. Geo News, checking later in the morning, recorded the highest total: more than 74,000 users reporting problems with the platform by 8:23 a.m. PT, with about 85% of those complaints tied specifically to ChatGPT functionality. None of these figures necessarily contradict each other — they’re snapshots of a number that was still climbing when most reporters were filing their stories.
OpenAI’s own status page became the most-cited source of the day, as it typically does during these incidents. According to Softonic and American Bazaar, the page stated the company was seeing “elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex,” and that it had “put in a fix” and was “continuing to watch recovery.” American Bazaar’s report added that OpenAI’s update described the incident as ongoing for “about 36 minutes” at the time of that particular status check, with engineers monitoring the rollout of a fix.
OpenAI’s status pages during outages tend to follow a familiar script: acknowledge elevated error rates, note which products are affected, confirm a fix is deployed, then post a follow-up once metrics return to normal. That pattern held again this time. The company has not, as of this writing, published a detailed post-incident report explaining the technical root cause of the September 3 disruption, which is consistent with how OpenAI has handled most of its outages this year — a status-page acknowledgment followed by a “resolved” notice, with fuller root-cause writeups arriving rarely, if at all.

None of the sourced reporting confirms a single shared root cause linking OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI’s outages — multiple AI providers experiencing trouble in the same morning could reflect a shared upstream dependency, pure coincidence, or simply the fact that all three companies now serve enough daily traffic that any hiccup gets noticed instantly. It’s a familiar pattern: Grok has separately been tied to data-center-level disruptions earlier in 2026. What the overlap does confirm is that AI chatbot outages are no longer rare, isolated events — they’re frequent enough that multiple major platforms failing in the same 24-hour window barely registers as unusual anymore.
Because so many outlets checked Downdetector at different moments, the table below lays out exactly what each one reported, in their own words, so the numbers can be read in context rather than as one contradictory blur.
The September 3 incident fits a pattern that Newsweek, in particular, has documented repeatedly over the past year and a half. On January 23, 2025, Newsweek reported a spike in outages after OpenAI’s status page said customers experienced “increased error rates on ChatGPT and the API” between roughly 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. PST, later marked resolved. On June 10, 2025, Newsweek reported that Downdetector logged more than 1,820 user problem reports by 11:12 a.m. EST as ChatGPT struggled with a range of functions. Two days later, on June 12, 2025, Newsweek covered a broader multi-platform outage — alongside Spotify, Google, and Discord — in which roughly 350 notifications concerned OpenAI and ChatGPT specifically.
More recently, on July 25, 2026, Gulf News reported a global ChatGPT outage that disrupted users in the UAE and worldwide, with connectivity issues hitting the web app, mobile app, and developer APIs — the same three surfaces affected in September. That incident was resolved within the day, with Gulf News later confirming in a follow-up report that “all affected systems had recovered,” and that reports had come in from the United States, Europe, India, Japan, Australia and other regions during the disruption.
None of the outlets covering the September 3 outage published a confirmed root cause, and that’s worth being upfront about — anything more specific than “elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex” would be speculation at this point. What the reporting does make clear is the shape of the problem: multiple product surfaces (chat, mobile, API, and the Codex coding tool) failed together, which points to something upstream and shared rather than an isolated feature bug.
That’s a familiar shape for large-scale AI services generally. But ChatGPT’s combination of scale and outage frequency means it draws outsized attention every time something breaks — a dynamic that is unlikely to change while it remains the most widely used chatbot on the market.
