Analysis, knowledge and skills for the modern global music business
If there’s one area of the music industry that’s ripe for some positive involvement of AI, it’s analytics. Having a deluge of streaming and social data hitting you in the nose is all very well, but making sense of it is another challenge.
Cue Chartmetric’s unveiling this morning of its new ‘Flow AI’ tool, which it’s pitching as “the most powerful vertical AI agent built for music professionals”.
Essentially that’s about putting a more-accessible prompting interface on top of all that data in a way that CEO Sung Cho says is “not just another AI chatbot”.
“Ask Flow anything about your roster, a competitor, or a market. It searches across Chartmetric’s full dataset, thinks through the data, and delivers clear answers — not raw numbers,” is how the Flow website explains it.
Chartmetric isn’t the only analytics firm exploring AI’s potential. We wrote about rival Viberate launching an MCP server in June, for example, while Soundcharts also has one (and Openstage does for artists’ owned fan-data too).
For these companies, AI is a necessary upgrade, and one that may boost their revenues: Chartmetric’s Flow AI subscriptions start at $60 a month.
The “not raw numbers” part of its pitch does spark a question, though. It’s a verdict on how music analytics have traditionally worked: a pipeline of pure data that needs specialists who can interpret and communicate it to colleagues (for example marketing teams) to take actions.
Will the AI-powered analytics era supercharge those specialists’ work or reshape their roles in interesting ways? Or does it threaten to cut them out of the loop? It’s a question that so many of us are facing at the moment when encountering new AI tools that can do some or all of what was previously our focus.
