Amazon has introduced on the platform a new AI-powered tool that lets users ask questions about products and receive conversational audio responses in real time. AI shopping assistants are those systems that present information in a natural dialogue style.
The new Join the chat feature aims to save shoppers’ time by providing key product details without the need to scroll through long descriptions or reviews. The AI gathers knowledge about product specifications, customer reviews, and other relevant information. For example, shoppers can learn whether a coffee maker is suitable for beginners, or whether a sweater pills according to reviews.
Instead of generic answers, the system builds on previous responses to offer more relevant and useful information while avoiding repetition. This should feel like a conversation with a knowledgeable salesperson in a store.
The company explains that each question shapes the subsequent course of the conversation: users can directly steer the direction of the dialogue, while preserving the ability to join in and customize the interaction.
Join the chat is part of the broader Hear the highlights experience, which offers short audio reviews across millions of product pages in the Amazon Shopping app. Testing of this feature began last year in the United States, but currently audio summaries are available only for selected products.
To use the feature, users open the product page in the app and tap the Hear the highlights button under the product image. They can then listen to a brief overview or tap the Join the chat icon to pose specific questions in text or voice. The audio can continue as you browse the page.
This new option complements Amazon’s growing suite of AI-powered tools: Rufus – a generative assistant for exploring products and comparing options, Interests – constantly tracks and suggests new items according to the shopper’s preferences, and Help me decide – recommends products based on searches, views, and purchase history.
The development of such AI tools highlights Amazon’s aim to make shopping more interactive and personalized. The new experience lets shoppers quickly obtain relevant information and make informed decisions at the point of purchase.
