The increasing use of AI in schools and universities is often seen as the answer to a lack of teaching staff. At the same time, however, there is growing evidence that large language models have significant weaknesses when used as the sole guide to learning. A study by Tiffany Li from the Stevens Institute of Technology shows that learners often trust AI answers more than is good for them, especially if they lack basic prior knowledge. The study makes it clear that incorrect content is easily overlooked, even when additional sources are available for verification.
For the analysis, a dedicated chatbot was developed to answer statistical questions, occasionally deliberately inserting incorrect information. These systematically integrated errors were intended to show how attentive users are when they can rely on a supposedly competent AI. A total of 177 people took part, including students and interested adults who were able to interact with the chatbot at any time while working on the task. An online textbook was available at the same time so that participants could check statements at any time.
Despite these aids, the majority of errors remained undetected. A considerable proportion of incorrect answers were accepted without checking, even though a small financial reward was offered for discovering discrepancies. This happened particularly frequently with people who felt unsure about the topic. The more confidently and fluently the AI answered, the greater the confidence that the statements were correct. The study thus shows how strongly formal certainty in formulation influences the perception of credibility, even when content is factually incorrect.
According to Tiffany Li, a chatbot should not be the first port of call for new knowledge. The benefit of these systems only increases when learners have enough prior knowledge to critically categorize answers. AI can support learning processes, but it cannot replace pedagogical guidance and content assurance. The study emphasizes that digital learning assistance can only develop its strengths if people are able to recognize errors and question assessments. Without this basis, there is a risk of incorrect information being accepted without reflection, which can distort or slow down learning processes.
The study makes it clear that, despite their increasing use, AI learning systems do not have the pedagogical depth that teachers bring to the classroom. Particularly critical is the fact that learners without sufficient prior knowledge are hardly able to reliably recognize incorrect or unclear AI statements. This creates a dependency on the chatbot’s outwardly confident wording, which can be deceptive if answers sound convincing but are imprecise or simply wrong in terms of content. At the same time, it is clear that AI-supported learning aids can certainly offer added value, but only if they are used as supplementary support and not as the sole source of knowledge. Learners who already have a solid foundation in the respective subject area can classify and critically examine the answers and even gain additional perspectives as a result. The study therefore emphasizes the importance of a balance between human guidance and technical support. It points out that the quality of learning ultimately depends on how consciously and reflectively digital tools are used, as well as on people retaining a central role in the learning process.
