LONDON (MNTV) — Major artificial intelligence systems have removed hijabs from images of Muslim women when instructed by users, raising concerns over consent, religious dignity and the potential use of generative AI to facilitate anti-Muslim abuse.
According to The Guardian found differing responses from ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini and Claude when the systems were asked to alter an AI-generated image of a hijab-wearing woman.
The Guardian reported that ChatGPT and Grok complied with requests to remove the hijab.
Gemini initially declined, citing concerns about removing clothing or head coverings without consent, but later produced an unveiled version after being asked to make the woman appear more “Western.”
Claude said it would not alter a photograph to remove a woman’s hijab without her consent. Arab News later conducted its own test and reported that ChatGPT, Grok and Gemini complied with requests to remove the head covering, while Claude declined.
The investigation followed a social media post by French far-right lawmaker Julien Odoul showing an altered image of a Muslim woman in which her hijab and long-sleeved clothing had been digitally removed.
Researchers say such manipulation reflects broader concerns about generative artificial intelligence being used to target Muslim women.
The Washington-based Center for the Study of Organized Hate said generative AI has increasingly been used in India to produce images sexualizing Muslim women or otherwise dehumanizing Muslims.
Its India Hate Lab recorded 1,165 hate-speech events targeting religious minorities in India during 2024, an increase of 74.4% from the previous year. Muslims were targets in 98.5% of the recorded incidents, either exclusively or alongside Christians.
Researchers have also documented AI-enabled abuse targeting prominent Muslim women in the United States, including politicians Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.
The tests also highlighted inconsistencies in AI safeguards. ChatGPT and Grok reportedly refused requests to remove a woman’s dress from an AI-generated image even though they had complied with requests involving a hijab.
Experts warned that removing religious clothing without consent can violate privacy, dignity and religious boundaries even when platform policies do not explicitly categorize the manipulation as prohibited.
We must take charge of our narrative. Research indicates that 92% of their Muslim coverage is negative. Help us change that.
