OpenAI has paused plans to roll out its proposed erotic chatbot feature, shifting focus back to its core artificial intelligence offerings, according to a report by the Financial Times.
The feature, internally referred to as an “adult mode” for ChatGPT, has not been cancelled but has been delayed indefinitely, the report suggested. The move reflects a broader strategy shift as the company prioritises strengthening existing products and consolidating capabilities into a unified platform.
Shift towards core products
The decision comes as OpenAI looks to streamline its product roadmap and reduce focus on what executives have described as “side projects.” The company is now concentrating on enhancing core tools and integrating features into a single “super-app” experience.
As part of this shift, OpenAI has also dropped Sora, its text-to-video model and web app, and is redirecting resources toward other research areas and product development.
According to Reuters, the company is focusing on rolling out more of its capabilities within a unified ecosystem rather than expanding into new, potentially controversial categories
Internal concerns and safety risks
The proposed adult mode had triggered internal debate within OpenAI, with employees, investors, and advisory groups raising concerns about its potential societal impact.
Members of OpenAI’s advisory council on AI and well-being reportedly flagged risks such as emotional dependence on chatbots and the possibility of minors accessing explicit content despite safeguards.
There were also concerns that such a product could conflict with the company’s broader mission of ensuring AI benefits society. Some discussions highlighted the risk of encouraging unhealthy attachments to AI systems and exposing users to problematic content.
Additionally, the company faced technical challenges in training models, originally designed to avoid explicit content, to safely generate such material while filtering illegal or harmful behaviour.
While OpenAI has not officially confirmed whether the feature will be permanently shelved, there is currently no timeline for its release.
