Two senior House Democrats have formally demanded that the White House preserve any AI chatbot conversations used in presidential decision-making, arguing that such exchanges may be official presidential records subject to federal law. They also requested a briefing on the administration’s use of AI tools.
The lawmakers warn that using commercial AI systems such as Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity for official government business could create record-keeping, transparency, national-security and accountability concerns.
Their letter follows reports that President Trump consulted Elon Musk’s chatbot, Grok, while discussing matters related to his presidency and foreign policy.
According to those reports, Trump asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if President Nicolás Maduro were captured, and the chatbot reportedly predicted that many Venezuelans would welcome his removal because he was unpopular.
The congressional inquiry was triggered after reports that Trump later authorized the operation that resulted in Maduro’s capture, raising broader questions about whether AI systems are influencing government decision-making and whether those interactions must be preserved as part of the historical record.
