Inflation in the Euro area reached 3.8% in September 2026, up from 3.2% in August, according to European Central Bank (ECB) estimates. Values vary, with Lithuania leading at 6.1%, followed by Bulgaria (5.6%) and Luxembourg and Cyprus at 5.2%. Malta recorded the lowest increase at 2.4%.
Energy is the main driver, with prices rising 18.9% in September as the war in the Middle East halted liquefied natural gas production, fuelled gas-price volatility and sent the global energy market into shock.
In response, the EU proposed several measures, including AccelerateEU, to strengthen energy resilience. Member states have introduced targeted relief measures, such as electricity price caps and energy vouchers, and lower fuel excise duties.
But higher energy bills affect the entire economy. Energy-intensive sectors, including manufacturing, chemicals, and agriculture, face rising production costs. Other sectors, such as food processing and pharmaceuticals, are indirectly hit by higher operational and supply-chain costs.
Companies pass these increases on to consumers, driving up the overall cost of goods and deepening Europe’s cost-of-living crisis.
Daily essentials, including food, alcohol, and tobacco, recorded 1.3% inflation in September. Service inflation in healthcare, education, and transport rose to 3.2%, while industrial goods inflation reached 1.1%, according to the ECB.
Inflation also hit the housing market. Eurostat reports that house prices rose by 5.1% and rents by 3% in the first quarter of 2026, compared with the first quarter of 2025, sparking protests across Europe.
Member states, including Italy and Greece, have asked for more fiscal flexibility to help families and businesses cope with surging prices, but Brussels has denied it.
