OpenAI has taken another step in turning artificial intelligence into an active digital assistant, officially rolling out direct tab-control capabilities to Google Chrome via its updated ChatGPT extension and desktop environment.
The feature brings OpenAI’s “Computer Use” capabilities into millions of users’ daily browsing workflows, allowing the AI chatbot to read open browser tabs, synthesize information across multiple web pages, and execute complex online tasks directly on a user’s behalf.
For years, generative AI models have been restricted to operating inside static text boxes or isolated sandboxes. The latest update transforms ChatGPT from a passive chat interface into an agentic co-pilot capable of navigating the open web using existing, signed-in user browser sessions.
By linking the official ChatGPT extension which already boasts a user base exceeding 7 million with the ChatGPT desktop application, users can invoke @Chrome or @Computer in specialized Work or Chat modes.
Once enabled, the AI operates across two distinct modes:
“Instead of just answering questions, ChatGPT can now act like a personal assistant directly in your browser,” noted technical reports following the rollout.
The setup requires activating the “Computer Use” toggle inside the ChatGPT desktop application’s settings menu, followed by enabling the official extension in Google Chrome or compatible Chromium browsers like Microsoft Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, and Opera.
When a user initiates a task using an @ mention in the ChatGPT sidebar or desktop window, the AI hooks into the browser’s active session. Because it relies on the user’s already authenticated sessions, the AI can perform actions on enterprise dashboards, internal tools, and private web services without requiring secondary logins.
To assist developers and power users, the sidebar update retains complete conversation histories and integrates seamlessly alongside open pages, providing side-panel guidance while users work.
OpenAI’s move comes as major tech companies race to deliver seamless “agentic” AI systems capable of autonomous task execution rather than simple response generation.
While competitors have explored similar autonomous capabilities such as Google integrating Gemini deeper into Chrome and Anthropic introducing computer use for Claude, OpenAI’s deployment strategy leverages existing browser extensions rather than requiring users to switch to entirely standalone, specialized web browsers.
By turning Google Chrome into an agent-enabled workspace, OpenAI leverages Chrome’s vast global user base to accelerate consumer adoption of AI-driven automation.
The ability to let an AI read screens, click buttons, and submit text across personal accounts has drawn heightened scrutiny from cybersecurity researchers.
Because the AI interacts with real-world web pages, it is potentially vulnerable to indirect prompt injection, a vector where malicious web pages hide hidden instructions designed to trick the AI into executing unwanted actions, such as exfiltrating private data or clicking unverified links.
To counter these risks, OpenAI has incorporated several user-centric safety guardrails:
Alongside the browser control update, OpenAI has continued expanding its broader ecosystem capabilities, rolling out refined multi-modal voice support and deeper productivity integrations across its product suite.
As browser-based computer use transitions from developer preview to daily consumer utility, the feature represents a clear signal: the browser is no longer just a window to view information, but an active workplace where artificial intelligence completes tasks alongside humans.
