The Toy Association
On September 10, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AI companion chatbot bills SB 867 and SB 1119 into law. Here’s what toy companies should know:
The Toy Association™ will share compliance guidance with members as it becomes available.
The Association continues to remain actively engaged on AI companion chatbot toy legislation at the state and federal levels and has maintained a consistent position opposed to moratoriums and in support of a study approach to ensure children’s safety. Following discussion with The Toy Association, legislation at the federal level has been modified to adopt a study approach, in lieu of a product ban. This advocacy is complemented by the Association’s work to help the industry navigate emerging AI technologies through its development of Safety Guidelines for AI-Enabled Toys.
The Toy Association will keep members informed of any policy developments regarding AI. For more information on The Toy Association’s advocacy initiatives at the state level or to join the State Government Affairs Committee, members may contact Charlotte Hickcox, senior director of state government affairs (Eastern states), and Lindsey Hueer, senior manager of state government affairs (Western states).
The Toy Foundation™ (TTF) is on site at The Toy Association’s LA Fall Preview® Market Weeks (September 14 to 25) with opportunities for the industry to come together to give back to children who need it most. As the philanthropic arm of The Toy Association, TTF’s mission is to unite the toy industry’s collective philanthropy to bring the joy of play to children in need.
As President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping prepare to meet at the White House on September 24 for a bilateral summit, The Toy Association™ continues to advocate on behalf of the toy industry for toys to be excluded from tariffs by the U.S.-China Board of Trade.
