OpenAI may have found the ad format that belongs inside a chatbot.
Instead of sending people to a brand’s website, a new ChatGPT ad format would let them click a button and begin speaking directly with the brand’s AI agent.

According to Digiday, OpenAI has introduced the format to select advertisers as part of an early Sponsored Agent pilot.
An ad includes a call-to-action such as “Chat with us.” Clicking it opens a branded conversation inside ChatGPT, where the user can ask questions and interact with the advertiser’s agent.
Most digital ads treat the click as an exit.
Search ads lead to product pages. Social ads open websites, storefronts or lead forms. Even the basic sponsored placements currently appearing beneath ChatGPT responses follow a familiar model.
Sponsored Agents change what happens after the click.
A retailer could ask about the shopper’s budget, preferences or available space before recommending products. A travel brand could refine a destination or itinerary. More complex inquiries could eventually be handed to a customer service or sales representative.
The landing page does not disappear entirely, but it may no longer be the first destination. The branded agent becomes the layer between interest and action.
It remains unclear how many advertisers currently have access to the pilot, and OpenAI did not comment on Digiday’s report.
Wayfair did confirm that it is participating at a limited scale. The retailer said it is exploring whether conversational commerce can help customers make more informed decisions, with guardrails covering product accuracy, transparency and handoffs to human service teams.
Those safeguards will matter.
A traditional ad makes a claim and sends someone elsewhere to investigate it. A branded agent can continue answering questions, shaping recommendations and potentially influencing a purchase throughout the conversation.
That makes accuracy part of the advertising experience, not simply a product or customer-service concern.
It also creates a tradeoff for advertisers. Keeping shoppers inside ChatGPT could reduce friction, but it gives the platform more control over a customer journey that brands would usually want to move onto their own websites.
Every major advertising platform eventually develops a format that reflects how people use it.
Google had search ads. Facebook built advertising into the feed. TikTok made the sponsored video look and behave like the content surrounding it.
A static placement beneath a ChatGPT answer can generate clicks, but it does not take advantage of the reason people opened ChatGPT in the first place.
They came to ask questions.
Sponsored Agents turn that behavior into the ad itself. The advertiser no longer pays only for attention or a visit. It gets an opportunity to continue the conversation around the problem the user is trying to solve.
That could make the format more useful than a conventional display ad. It could also make the boundary between assistance and persuasion considerably harder to navigate.
The pilot still has to prove that users want to speak with branded agents, that those agents can provide reliable answers and that the resulting conversations deliver measurable value for advertisers.
But the direction makes sense.
If ChatGPT becomes a major advertising platform, its defining format probably will not look like a banner, search result or sponsored post.
It will ask you what you need next.
