Everytown Labs Rolls Out First Product, AskEverytown, AI-Powered ChatBot
NEW YORK – Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund today announced the launch of Everytown Labs, an innovation hub that will create and accelerate advanced technology to address gun violence in America. As the nation’s complex public health epidemic claims 125 lives every day and wounds hundreds more, Everytown Labs seeks to leverage the developments in artificial intelligence that have made other challenging problems suddenly solvable.
Everytown Labs will develop a series of new digital tools to advance the fight against gun violence, the first of which launches in beta today. AskEverytown is a first-of-its-kind AI chatbot that provides in-depth, accessible expertise on gun violence statistics, laws, and insights. Every answer from AskEverytown is powered by a knowledge base of gun violence data, gun violence prevention policies, peer-reviewed research, investigations of the firearm industry, and more.
“Responding to the epidemic of gun violence requires us to summon every ounce of ingenuity,” said Nick Suplina, senior vice president for law and policy at Everytown for Gun Safety who is leading the effort. “Everytown Labs is working towards a future where technology can produce richer data, surface new insights, and even help prevent gun violence before it happens.”
“As someone who has spent their career advocating for tech that serves the public good, and — like so many others — who has personally been impacted by gun violence, I support Everytown’s innovative approaches to gun violence prevention,” said Julie Samuels, president and CEO of Tech:NYC. “The power of AI to transform society is undeniable, and it’s crucial that we harness this potential, grounded in data and research, for common good and safety. I’m excited to see the impact of AskEverytown and hopeful that the private sector will lend its expertise and support to this vital effort.”
“The announcement of Everytown Labs is a transformative step in our ability to curb gun injuries in the U.S. using a public health approach,” said Chethan Sathya, MD, MSc, pediatric surgeon, advisor to health technology and AI startups nationally, and director of the Center for Gun Violence Prevention at Northwell Health. “Whether it’s the need to improve our public health data systems or predictive analytics, better understand and mitigate risk factors and target gun violence prevention strategies to those most in need, or evaluate firearm strategies and policies in real time to see if they are working — emerging technologies like AI offer major advancement opportunities across these critical areas. Everytown’s commitment to leveraging technology to solve complex public health crises like gun violence, from an apolitical but data-driven lens, will undoubtedly move us closer to stopping this epidemic.”
