OpenAI has introduced an Apple Messages plugin for ChatGPT that allows users to connect their incoming messages to the chatbot. The tool makes it possible to work with conversations in the Apple Messages app directly through ChatGPT.
With the new integration, users can organize and analyze messages, edit their text, search for information in old chats, and prepare replies for contacts. During a demonstration, OpenAI showed that ChatGPT can suggest how to continue a conversation based on the content of messages received the day before.
The Apple Messages plugin supports deleting messages as well as creating and sending new texts on the user’s behalf. It has also been integrated with Codex and ChatGPT Work, so its capabilities can be used for both private communication and work correspondence.
The feature effectively allows the chatbot not only to suggest drafts but also to perform actions in chats. Before a message is sent, users can review the generated text and edit it if necessary.
The introduction of such a tool also raises questions about the privacy of personal and work chats. OpenAI told Bloomberg that the plugin processes data locally on the user’s device and does not create a general index of all their messages. However, the company has not yet disclosed the technical details of how this mechanism works.
