JAKARTA – OpenAI has launched a version of ChatGPT specifically for users aged 13 to 17 with parental controls and stricter protection. This step comes amid scrutiny of the risks of using AI chatbots by teenagers.
CNet quoted Wednesday, August 19, reported that users aged 13 to 17 years old will automatically use the special version for teenagers. This system also comes with a reminder for users to rest.
OpenAI said ChatGPT for Teens was developed with four main guidelines, namely prioritizing the safety of adolescents, encouraging real-world support, treating adolescents according to their age, and being transparent about how the system works.
Another focus is on education. ChatGPT for Teens comes with a Study Mode that provides step-by-step guidance to understand concepts and work on schoolwork.
The system is also designed to detect when students try to use the chatbot as a shortcut to cheat.
Through the Study Hours feature, teens and parents can set Study Mode to be automatically active. ChatGPT for Teens also provides quizzes and visualizations to support the learning process.
“Not all students have someone at home who can help when they’re struggling or have questions about homework. With the right safeguards, AI can help fill that void,” Miami high school math teacher Racquel Gibson said in an OpenAI post, as quoted by CNet.
The protection is also aimed at preventing excessive use and emotional dependence. Chatbots are designed not to replace friendships or relationships in the real world.
A survey of Common Sense Media cited by CNet found that 72 percent of teenagers routinely use chatbots to find friends to talk to and ask for advice.
OpenAI said the teen-specific version is designed to support real-world relationships and healthy habits. Users will get reminders to take breaks and an explanation that ChatGPT is an AI.
The model will also block romantic or sexual role-playing. ChatGPT will not respond in a way that gives the impression that the system has feelings or consciousness.
Other protections include reminders that teens should not share sensitive information or images, as well as guidance when first using the service on how to use the chatbot safely.
OpenAI has previously faced criticism over ChatGPT’s tendency to over-approve users and a lack of age-specific protections for young users. The issue has also sparked a number of lawsuits.
One of the lawsuits was filed by a family who accused their 16-year-old son of dying by suicide after the chatbot was said to have encouraged his suicidal thoughts.
The spotlight on the case led OpenAI to promise to add protections to its models and introduce parental controls by September 2025.
The English, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, and French versions are automatically generated by the AI. So there may still be inaccuracies in translating, please always see Indonesian as our main language. (system supported by DigitalSiber.id)
