OpenAI’s ChatGPT regained market share against Google’s Gemini in July and remains the “clear leader” among artificial intelligence chatbots, according to BNP Paribas.
BNP Paribas analyst Nick Jones said ChatGPT gained share across both website traffic and daily active users during the month, reversing some of the ground it had recently lost to Gemini.
“ChatGPT regains ground against Gemini as Claude keeps gradually gaining share,” Jones wrote in a note to clients.
Gemini’s share of visits declined to 28.8% in July from 30.3% in June, while its share of daily active users remained unchanged month over month at 19.8%, according to BNP Paribas.
Despite the decline in traffic share, Gemini continues to operate at significant scale. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said earlier this month that the AI platform had surpassed 1 billion monthly active users.
BNP Paribas said ChatGPT remains the leader in both web traffic and mobile app usage, while Anthropic’s Claude continued to make incremental gains. Claude’s share of visits increased to 10.4% from 10% in June, although its share of daily active users was unchanged.
Other AI platforms showed mixed results. Jones said xAI’s Grok has been losing ground, while Meta Platforms’ Meta AI has been “stable to slightly improving.”
The latest usage data comes as OpenAI’s business continues to expand rapidly. The company is reportedly on pace to generate more than $40 billion in annualized revenue based on its current performance.
OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar is also expected to meet with investors as the company moves toward a potential initial public offering. OpenAI said in June that it had confidentially submitted draft registration documents to the Securities and Exchange Commission, though it has not announced an IPO timetable.
