New advancements in AI are changing the way Americans manage their finances.
But it's important to be cautious about how much information and power we're providing chatbots.
NerdWallet Credit Card Expert Sara Rathner says there are two big dangers you want to watch out for when turning to an AI chatbot for financial help:
“The answers you get might not actually be helpful,” says Rathner. “They might not be accurate.”
She continues, “They might actually hurt your financial situation, so you always want to follow up ask more questions, and look into where the chatbot is drawing its answers from.”
Rathner says we’re also seeing new advances in AI capabilities.
She says ChatGPT can now connect your credit cards to your bank account.
Additionally, Visa, Mastercard and Robinhood have launched AI-powered agents that can make purchases, such as concert tickets, on your behalf.
“We're hearing talks of AI chatbots that can execute transactions for you take things off of your to-do list,” says Rathner. “Shop for you, pay your bills for you.”
Is it safe to let an AI chatbot shop for you?
“So this would be done with parameters that you set,” explains Rathner. “So you would set budgets, you would set a preferred method of payment and you would also set parameters as to what you would want purchased on your behalf.”
She says, similar to any subscription you might sign up for, you still need to monitor these transactions.
She says it's okay to incorporate AI into your finances, just make sure you're doing your own research and remaining an active participant.
