The investigation into the alleged murder of three members of a Bengaluru family has raised new questions about how artificial intelligence tools can be misused and whether existing safety mechanisms are sufficient to prevent harmful use.
According to investigators, 25-year-old software professional Kenneth Arun Kumar allegedly spent nearly six months interacting with an AI chatbot while planning the crime. Police claim he framed his questions as hypothetical situations to obtain information without triggering the platform's safety restrictions.
Kenneth and his live-in partner, Shwetha, have been arrested in connection with the deaths of her parents and younger sister at their apartment in Bengaluru's KR Puram. Investigators believe the incident followed a dispute over an alleged unpaid loan of around ₹50 lakh.

As part of the investigation, police are examining the accused's digital activity. Reports indicate that Kenneth allegedly sought information on topics including methods of incapacitating individuals, removing bloodstains using chemicals and disposing of bodies. Investigators are also reviewing searches related to whether an industrial furnace intended for a planned cloud kitchen could be used to destroy human remains.
Officials told local media that the accused repeatedly interacted with the chatbot while refining the alleged plan. Police have reportedly contacted the company operating the AI platform to obtain conversation records that could form part of the digital evidence in the case.
Investigators have not accused the AI platform of any wrongdoing. Instead, the focus has shifted to whether users can bypass built-in safeguards by rephrasing prompts or presenting harmful requests as fictional or academic scenarios. (Inputs from CNBC TV18 report)
